Marti Michell week day retreat--Kaliedoscope

Kaleidoscope Creations

The Kaleidoscope pattern is easy to make, but because of the design possibilities, even advanced quilters can enjoy Kaleidoscope style blocks and variations. Discuss design and color possibilities and sewing techniques; then cut with the Kaleido-Ruler, a tool Marti has designed that gives you the guidelines for cutting all of the triangles in the block. It eliminates making templates, simplifies accurate cutting and can be used for many different size blocks. It is laser-cut from thick acrylic for rotary cutting, but can be used with a pencil and scissors.  Best of all, Marti supplies the rulers for you to use in class.

Supply List:
Cutting supplies: rotary cutter, ruler (at least 3”x18”) and mat (at least 12” X 18”)
Your favorite routine sewing supplies
Sewing machine

    a.  The minimum requirement is to bring one half yard of a light fabric and one half yard of a contrasting fabric. They should look good together. These will be used to learn the technique and will make a small 24" square quilt without borders. It is your choice whether you want to bring border fabric and supplies (batting, backing and binding) to finish this small quilt during the retreat OR…

    b. Marti will demo fussy cutting, working with stripes (think Jinny Beyer), Marti's Kaleidoscope Star quilt (think some Stack & Whack look) and more. You may want to bring a small assortment of additional fabrics to make small samples or you may prefer just watching the demos and being inspired to shop at Quilt Mercantile for a new Kaleidoscope project for the second day.  You can worked on an advanced Kaleidoscope  which can be used to make striking borders.

   c.  Not interested in the Kaleidoscope?  Never fear.  Marti has more tricks and tidbits up her sleeve than you can imagine.  She will demonstrate her new Pineapple ruler which works much like her very popular log cabin ruler series.  Marti has told me that for the week day retreat, participants can even choose to do one of the Log Cabin projects our of her Log Cabin ABCs book.  You will learn so very much from Marti about piecing.  She does not just stick to the templates only!  They are a tool to help your piecing be quicker, more accurate, and ultimately easier...
